Legendary Tip of the Day: Read the Grain Before You Cut
Wood has fibers, and they like to lay one way. Cut or plane the wrong way and you get tear-out. First, look at the edge of the board and find the little "uphill" lines. Then do a light test stroke with your plane or sandpaper. If it feels smooth, youre going with the fibers. Theres one extra clue in oak that makes this even easier.
