Hyundai's Getting Ready to Crash the Pickup Party — And It Might Actually Matter
According to MotorTrend's sources, the truck will likely share bones with Hyundai's three-row Palisade SUV, which means it'll probably get the same 3.8-liter V6 engine putting out around 291 horsepower. The styling cues are expected to follow Hyundai's current design language — think aggressive front grilles and sharp body lines that look more like a spaceship than your dad's F-150. The truck is reportedly being developed primarily for the American market, which tells you everything you need to know about where Hyundai thinks the money is.
The timing isn't accidental. Ford's Ranger is back and selling decent numbers, Chevy just redesigned the Colorado, and Nissan's Frontier got a complete makeover after being stuck in 2005 for about fifteen years. Meanwhile, Toyota can't build Tacomas fast enough, and they're still commanding premium prices even used. Hyundai sees an opening, especially if they can undercut everyone else on price while loading up on the tech and warranty coverage they're known for.
✍ My Take: Here's the thing about the midsize truck market — it's been waiting for someone to shake things up for years. Toyota's been coasting on the Tacoma's reputation while charging luxury car prices for what's basically a decent but not spectacular truck. Ford's Ranger is fine but feels like they phoned it in. Chevy's trying, but good luck finding one on the lot. If Hyundai can build a truck that hauls your gear, tows your boat, and doesn't nickel and dime you to death, they might actually have something. Their 10-year warranty alone makes them worth a look, especially when you're talking about a work truck that needs to earn its keep every day. And let's be honest — most guys buying midsize trucks aren't hauling concrete blocks every weekend. They want something that looks capable, fits in their garage, and doesn't drink gas like a drunk sailor. The real test will be whether Hyundai builds it tough enough for actual work or just makes it look pretty for suburban driveways. If they nail the durability and keep the price reasonable, Toyota and Ford better start paying attention. Because nothing motivates better trucks faster than real competition breathing down your neck.
